In Ravenscourt Park there was an old man
Who lived in an alabaster cave
Each morning he’d eat Bitterness on Toast
Then for work he would leave
With his glass jar tucked under his arm
Hobbling through the streets
Waiting for the moment tension would strike
To gather his bittersweet treat
Throughout the day he’d fill his jar
Revelling in its growing weight
Daydreaming the joy of getting home
To eat his sandwich filled with hate
To sit at the table with his favourite plate
And fill his belly full of misery
Then off to bed he’d take himself
Where he would dream of history
The dreams weren’t much different
From the days that he had
Except for the ring on his finger
And the smile that greeted him at the door
But the bitterness it did linger
While he ate his sandwich filled with hate
His wife ate strawberry jam
Too sweet was the taste of her lips
It angered the little old man
Night after night he’d dream of those lips
A never ending cycle of torment
Waking up to the brim with anxiety
Ready for a day of resentment

The warrior stares at the space
Where her arm used to be
Warm by the fire
Yet still feeling so empty
Riches all around
But still in her mind
Is the battle she lost
Where she lost her pride
Abandoned in battle
Fighting alone
The memories a torture
As she sits back at home
The sadness in her veins
The tears will not flow
The emptiness fill
Her darkest shadow
The queen played her cards
A damsel in distress
Pulling on the strings
Where ceremonies caress
The king chose his queen
When the crier spoke out
“Fighting for what?“
The warrior did shout
Her heart molten lava
Her pain like the current
Pulling her under
The destitute torrent
There will come a day
When the warrior will face the queen
Will vengeance play out
Will she rip out her spleen
Or will the king get in the way
And even the score
The warrior waits patiently
Because she knows this means war… -
I’m still learning to unlearn
My hearts too full
I feel a burn
I wander between extremes of sorts
Belonging and abandonment
Torn between the pull and fall
The heart that contemplates it all
The woman that has seen the world
For the man who completes the mould
It’s hard to understand the pain
That doesn’t exist
Is this all in vain?
She closes her eyes and sees his heart
Lovingly torn apart
She knows not what to do
She knows her eyes long for you
The juxtaposed ideas wane
The tears subside and begin to drain
The sun returns and casts her glare
The love warms they return to share
The inner child they promised to hold
The love they defrost from the cold
I do not know where it goes
I fear for the love I show
If it’s too much I guess I lose
For honesty is all I chose
Poetry be my hidden centre
Brave begins this lyrical banter
Shakespeare gave Juliet her centre
A muse to devote her complicated heart
Her loving words, her form of art -
The weekend wasn’t enough
When her share was halved
She longed to stop time for a moment
Gaze at his face
Feel his warm embrace
The lump in her throat as he left
Scared by her feelings, she pushed him
Put on her mask and told a good tale
Stories she wrote
But honest she was not
For the story that hurt her was this one
Waiting on the sea she’ll find him
Once she finished her ship
But weak and unsure if she’ll make it
And perhaps another love he will meet
Unfinished and hidden went the story
Afraid she’d scare him away
Masked she slunk into the shadows
Feeling safe, the little sparrow was brave
Alas, she promised to be true
And love hard she does do
Bare all! Surrender to the universe
Whatever will be, will be
If her husband is meant to be waiting
Then waiting she will find he
If not, then just enjoy what is
Let go of what you cannot grasp
Allow the waters to settle
Hold her own heart in a clasp
Unable to stop her falling
She falls all the time
Clumsy she is with her feelings
But meh, it makes for good rhymes -
Be careful what you teach her
Her view must match your words
Repeating blatant lies will sink
Like a breeze block into the lake
She’ll watch it drag you under
As the bubbles start to rise
The truth taken with you
You’d rather bask in disguise
What am I afraid of?
You. That you will hurt her heart
That she will see your weakness
And you will tear her apart
Your shadow stood before me
As it stands above her now
And you pretend you’re Jesus
Rather heal strangers than take a bow
It’s ok to not know everything
It’s ok to learn as we go
But we need to live our truth
So we can teach her to do so
I don’t want to fight with you
I left to soothe my scars
I won’t let you mould her
To build a mountain of masks
I learnt to let my light shine
I see her light glow
Let’s help her find her wings
Let’s watch our little girl grow -
Lying in the darkness
In pain and alone
Out jumps a message
Four words I’d forgotten
A wave takes over
A dread settles in
I thought this was over
I’ll not let you win
I’ve got over this darkness
I’m out the other side
I’m standing by a rainbow
Regained my pride
And yet maybe a little
I’m not quite there
How many more years
Will I suffer in here
My mind in a battle
My heart slightly torn
The stitches keep opening
Just smile and carry on
Fake it til you make it
Re-frame the hurt
You’re a powerful soul
And beauty you exert
Breathe and smile
Give yourself a hug
You’re doing great
Love’s the hardest drug -
Who are we?
Are we people by fixed values
With a set moral standing?
Do we know who we are
In the face of president or peasant?
Will we live by the same standard
Whether the world is watching or not?
For some of us the answer is a clear yes
For some it’s a laughable no
But there are the group in between
Who would say yes to our face
And no behind their eyes
Those who only wash their hands
When someone else is in the bathroom
Those who empty their pockets
In the silent alleyway
Those who see a fallen wallet and will
Look to see how much money there is
Before they consider handing it in
With or without the cash
Those who do not think about comments
Those who get carried away with rats
Feasting in the moment on the flesh
Not realising they’re feasting on themselves
What a party!
Who are WE?
Are WE people by fixed values
With a set moral standing?
Do WE know who WE are
In the face of president or peasant?
Will WE live by the same standard
Whether the world is watching or not?
There is no we
There is simply a set of individuals
We are he, she, you & I
Each individual being responsible
Who are you?
